I've just become acquainted with this performer, and with this site. I'm curious why it seems so difficult to find any of the recordings listed in the discography. Are these recordings available on any web distributors? My belated condolences on the loss of an obviously great man.

I think this website should have a link to some kind of CD order form. I am interested in buying his CD, and rather than buying it from a commercial amazon or borders, if there is a way (i.e. Sultanov foundation or something like that) to get it and benefit directly the Sultanov, I would rather choose that way. Thank you. NaYoung from Cambridge, MA USA

I was lucky to be around Alesha during his time at Uspenky school and observe his growing talent. I remember crying while listening to some of his performances as his music touched my soul to its deepist points. Although he is no longer around us, his music will live forever. Every time I listen to Chopin Ballade in g-minor, Chopin Concerto No.2 or Mefisto Waltz I remember Alesha.

I had an honour to meet Alexei 10 years ago. It was in Bydgoszcz (Poland), a few months after Chopin International Piano Competition. His interpretation of Fantaisie Impromptu in c-sharp minor will stay in my heart forever! Let me repeat what I'd said that evening...you are...you'll always be the best...!THANK YOU

Dace, I heard about Alexei's passing through Jennifer Marrtin in Honolulu - Jerry Martin's daughter. I had the pleasure of playing with Alexei on Maui, Hawaii, about 12 years ago. I played the tuba in the Maui Symphony and Alexei was the soloist at one of our concerts. I was in such awe of his playing that I almost couldn't play myself. He was truly one of the finest pianists I have ever heard, and the Maui audiences still remember his visit here fondly. (I met you at a gathering after the concert.) My deepest sympathy for you in this time of sorrow. Alexei's music will live on forever. Lisa Owen

I would like to concentrate on the positive side regarding Alexei and although obviously his passing is a great loss, his living was such a great gift to all who were able to experience his musical ability and vibrant personality. I was priviliged to hear Alexei play in New Orleans Louisiana when I was young and what struck me most surprising about him, aside from his virtuosity and flare, was that he was such a laid back and sincere person. I got to meet him back stage and could have never imagined that such a serious and talented musician could be so sociable and playful. As a pianist I can only hope to one day reach the level of proficiency Alexei had at the keyboard while at the same time keeping a positive and down to earth attitude. I extend my sorrow to Alexie's family and friends but also thank his parents for gracing the musical world with such a great gift. Sincerely, Aleksandr Bernhard - Pianist

Hello. I just wanted to pass on my deepest condolences, to the family of Alexei. I am 30 and have been a classical pianist since the age of 8. Alexei was undoubtedly a hero of mine as a pianist growing up. I had his footage on video of the 1989 International Piano Competition and watched his performances of the Mephisto Waltz (Listz) and Rach's 2nd piano concerto over and over. (Loved watching him break that string on the piano!) I would use his performances on that video to show off to my friends (who weren't musicians) exactly how great classical pianists can be. People would just be awe-struck at how incredible he was, musicians or not. He performed Rach's 2nd that day better than I have ever heard anyone do it, and is my favourite recording of the piece. (I also have the supposed greatest recording ever of this piece by Richter, but I don't believe it's as good as Alexei's of that day in 1989. Other artist's recordings of this piece are laughable by comparison. Alexei's had so much passion, it was incomparable to any other.) I just wanted to say I will miss him terribly. I still have the video of him on tape from Van Cliburn in 1989. I'm so sad that this has occured and it just makes me realise how unfair life really is. It's just so wrong that something like this can happen to such a genius. It's just not fair. Rest in peace Alexei. You are a wonderful man and the most incredible of musicians. I can assure you your name, and your incredible gift will never ever be forgotten. Andrew (Australia)

Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences on the passing of Alexei Sultanov. I recently was exposed to his supreme artistry through his many recordings and videos of his recitals. I found his performances of the great masters to be of the highest order. He played the music as I felt it and for that reason, I loved to hear him play. The world lost an outstanding musical artist and it will never be the same. I feel privileged to have lived during the time Alexei Sultanov was making music on this earth.

I extend my deepest sympathy to the family. I am so sorry that Alexei did not have a life filled with joy and happiness and that he could not make music on his own terms. Winning an important contest seems wonderful at the time, but it isn't. Once you win people try to tear you down and criticize, instead of nurturing. Rachmaninoff said it best, "music is a bad business"

I feel privileged to have known Alexei, first by reputation as winner of the Van Cliburn and then personally as an inspiration to all of us as he continued to share his life and talent after his disabling stroke. The two of you seemed almost as one. I liked Van Cliburn's description of you at the memorial service as "old souls". Alexi's spirit will remain alive for so many people affected by his short but very full life.

It was tough hearing that Mr. Sultanov had passed away after a long battle with stoke illness. I was reading the obituaries and put them down after reading a couple of them. I glanced over again at the paper and saw "Cliburn winner" and wondered what it was about. If I had not glanced on a fluke, I would not have noticed it that day. His abilites were beyond compare when it came to true technical prowess and the ability to captivate an audience. He will be sorely missed.

These remarks were made by Beverly Archibald at the celebration of Alexei's life, held on July 5, 2005 at the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, Texas. I was privileged to be a player in the last act of Alexei’s time among us. This testimony is to his indomitable spirit as he began, in the Spring of 2004, to entertain again in nursing homes, hospitals and schools. With Alexei playing the right hand and Dace providing the left on the keyboard, or accompanying him on the cello, they reached out together as a single splendid instrument to bring a message of encouragement and inspiration. Here are some comments from people who heard them play. Christmas Eve, 2004, a local hospital: “I was visiting in ICU and was very blessed to hear you and Dace play for everyone. What a wonderful Christmas present for all who were there. It touched all of us at a really low moment.” February 2005, Tarrant County College: “They presented a reality that we often try to shield ourselves from”. “His determination to continue to pursue his love of music combined with her courage and devotion to him is a timeless love story that begs to be told.” March 2005 – Stroke Support Group: “Your message – both through your music and your words – of never giving up, of always persevering, could not help but inspire everyone you meet. You are both beautiful witnesses to the human spirit.” April 2005 – Seniors Luncheon: “Alexei, you had many years of entertaining and inspiring untold numbers of people with your exceptional talent and heart. But now the two of you are, in my opinion, making a difference in the lives of people in a totally different and more meaningful way. Your spirit, your determination, your attitude of never giving up, your desire to share what you have, your obvious deep love and devotion for each other – these are qualities that the world yearns for and needs to experience through people like you.” May 2005 – Nursing Home: “I was privileged today to witness the valiant spirit of two remarkable people. Many would have given up in defeat when faced with the tragedy of Alexei’s debilitating stokes – and yet, here you are, sharing your talents for making beautiful music with many who might never have heard you otherwise.” June 10, 2005, Alzheimer Facility: “Several of our residents got very emotional and cried when you played. Your story touched our hearts. You both are such an inspiration to all of us.” Alexei and Dace felt strongly that he was a living example of what people could do to overcome adversity. He wanted to encourage others to work hard to rise above their so-called “limitations”. Their motto and their mantra of Never Give Up resonated with all who heard them.

Dearest Dace, My sincerest condolences on the loss of your love, and my friend, Alexei. I was so sad when I returned to Dallas on Monday and heard of his passing. He truly was an inspiration to us all. As you are! He will always be remembered here, at the Center for BrainHealth, as a shining star. It was my pleasure to have been able to work with you both. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to help Alexei as he continued to work to improve his speech and cognitive abilities. I know that your devotion was key to the improvements he made in the face of such severe injuries. You should always know, and be proud of, the absolute love and devotion you cared for Alexei with day after day. Please know, that our work here will continue in earnest. We are passionate about helping those with brain injuries and will continue our work to seek methods for higher levels of recovery. Alexei is an inspiration to us and his memory will remain in our hearts as we seek to help those afflicted with brain injuries/disease. Dace, I will be in touch with you. I hope you will join me for lunch and maybe a visit to the Center when you are ready. May Alexei's memory be a blessing to you, Love, Shani

Our whole family was shocked to hear this sad news. Suddenly, such an infinite sadness and emptiness visited me. I was just a little kid, one of those "malyavkas" in Tamara Afanasevna's class, when Aleshka was already a glowing star. I remember so vividly his first orchetsra concerts conducted by my father, professor Khaknazarov. Those were unforgettable moments. The first concerto by Chaikovsky for piano and orchestra since then is only associated in my mind with Aleshka. And of course Chopin, that he felt so strongly about when he played his music. He will always remain as a glowing person to me. When he was just 7 or 8 years old, my father pronounced those words, that I never ever heard from him in relation to anyone else. He said: "such talent is born only once in thousand years". Everyone in my family has special memories about Aleshka. My father, Zakhid Khaknazarov, as a conductor of many concerts that he played with him (Aleshka's first orchestra concerts ever), my mother Rano, as a friend of his family (Faizulla aka and tetya Natasha), my sister Barno, as his friend and classmate (also studied in Tamara Afanasevna's class)and whose childhood is probably associated with Aleshka only:) and myself..I probably don't have such strong connections with him, but emotionally, my feelings about his performance and life in general is as strong as those of my family. We will always remember Aleshka. We beleive, that he was blessed with such great talent and yet with such increadible parents, his first teacher Tamara Afanasevna and a wonderful friend, his wife Dace, who has been his saving angel throughout his rough life he had been granted. We bring our deepest sympathies to Alesha's family, his parents, his brother and of course Dace. With warmest memories and love, Khaknazarov's family (Zakhid, Rano, Barno and Umida)

Dear Dace, There are no words to assuage your grief just now. A great task lies ahead of you, to honor Alexei by finding joy in your life. Alexei's life and death have not been in vain. He is honored by people the world over, and through his music, his spirit will live on. Unlike most of us, he cannot be forgotten. When someone somewhere puts one of his cd's into the cd player and listens to it, he will be there. His life was jam-packed with a rare talent, honors, and most of all, your love. What more can any man ask for? Perhaps a long life, but we are not guaranteed that, as you can attest. Dace and Alexei, thank you for all of the happiness you have brought to others.

Dear Dace, You are in my prayers, and you have my deepest sympathy for the passing of Alexei. Your performances together in recent months are an inspiration to all. And so was his dazzling musicianship. I still remember well when he played the Mephisto Waltz at the Cliburn Competition--definitive performance, in my opinion. In May I had contacted Beverly Archibald via e-mail (we knew each other from days at Texas Wesleyan University), and she said you had gone on a trip. I hope your trip gave you pleasant memories that you will treasure. May God bless you. (Dr.) Janet Hildebrand

My deepest sympathy to all of Alexei's family. I heard him play many times, and I was honored to play the organ for Alexei and Dace when they visited Kilgore for Van Cliburn's recital many years ago. In heaven there are no wheelchairs, and all the pianos are in tune. As a young pianist in Dallas at the age of seven, I was transfixed and inspired as Alexei poured his passion into that piano in order to win the Van Cliburn competition. My love for piano started with Alexei, and he has been an icon for me of the power and emotion of music, all throughout my life. I will always remember with fondness his incredible gifts, his unfazable heart, and his iron-clad will to return to piano. His music and message will continue to influence me for the rest of my journey. Dace, peace and comfort to you.

Alexei, I just wanted to say how you sparked my approach to classical music and the discipline it commands not only to performers but to listeners. I took piano lessons at a young age but being inclined to look at practicing as being forced on me I finally convinced my parents to let me quit. I loved to play but only how I wanted, loud and fast without much discipline. I finally quit playing altogether. Years later in college (with that same attitude) I changed majors my soph. year to music thinking since it came easy that I'd have plenty of time to continute my carefree lifestyle. So there I was, a piano performance major in a rock band. The only keyboard practice I got was during my lesson time. The communication barrier with my professor was ridiculous. I finally quite and changed majors. I was dating my future wife who was a performance major at the time. I went with her to the 1989 Cliburn semi-final round only as a relationship requirement thinking the whole thing would be a bore. I looked thru a program and came across your picture. Right there (not knowing you had even made it to the semi-final round or having heard you) I said 'this guy is gonna win'. You just had this fearless look, like you were on the offensive to communicate yourself. The commissioned William Schuman, the Appassionata, Mozart, Prokofiev, it all had your distinct intensity and poetry. After that day I fell in love with it all, took it very seriously. I transferred to a reputable music school in Texas being accepted under an artist in residence and began to practice seriously for the first time ever. Once I became exposed to certain people of classical piano in higher position I became very dissapointed. I experienced such an elitist attitude among my mentor and others associated in her field that I gave it up once again only after a semester. There might be some truth to the notion that I was looking for a reason to quit but much of it is to do with being in that suffocating atmosphere. To put in the hours it takes to be a concert pianist I know you must love the music but there is something huge lacking in that world, it's not love of music but love of people. There is a culture gap between the average teenager (especially American teenager) and the normal type of clique associated with "the arts". The audiences at the cliburn look older and older every 4 years. I just came from Ft. Worth yesterday from the semi's and there were very few people to be found under 30 that wasn't a contestant. Nothing against people over 60 at all but still it's concerning to see such apathy with younger people. There needs to be efforts to exercise the potential impact the classics have. Our society is now built on instant gratification and to enjoy the classics you need to sometimes work at listening to open up understanding and to develop that love. I've read the stories of you playing at rest homes, etc. this is that love I'm talking about. The older I get t Paul

Dear Alexie and Dace, Your courage in the face of physical disability is very inspiring. I am a fan of Alexie's, having watched the video of his Van Cliburn performances several times. I am a pianist myself. I studied with Rosina Lhevinne at The Juilliard School. In 1988, I suffered two cervical vertebrae fractures in a car accident. I was told that I would never play the piano again, and I began taking courses in rehabilitation therapy as a possible second career. However, after two years of rehabilitation counseling, I decided that I couldn't possibly live without playing the piano. I began playing simple one octave scales. I remember crying with joy at being able to play, and hear, a very slow C major scale with one hand. I was gradually able to expand to two hands playing two octaves. That was a major accomplishment! In 1997, I found a Dr. who was able to help with the extensive scarring in my neck and associated pain, and over a period of four years, I began playing the piano again. This past April, I was able to perform the Rachmaninoff 2nd piano concerto with an orchestra. I sincerely hope that a treatment will be available to you, as well. You have an amazing talent, Alexei, and an ability to communicate directly to the audience with integrity and convincing originality. I will continue to follow your progress on your website. I wish the very best for both of you. Sincerely, Anita Fobes

I was privileged today to witness a demonstration of the valiant spirit of two remarkable people. Alexei and Dace you have received the world's highest accolades, yet, today you're in a very different place than you were five years ago. Many would have given up in defeat when faced with the tragedy of Alexei's debilitating strokes -- and yet, here you are, sharing your talents for making beautiful music with many who might never have heard you otherwise. Both of you are an inspiration to me to hang in there even when the way seems impossible. And what a love story the two of you are! You are a living example of "for better or worse, in sickness and in health." I will pray that good things will continue to happen in your lives. Dear Alexei and Dace, Your concert at the Benbrook YMCA was as moving an experience as I have ever had (outside of the birth of children and grandchildren!). You two touched me more deeply than you can ever know. Alexei, you had many years of entertaining and inspiring untold numbers of people with your exceptional talent and heart. But now the two of you are, in my opinion, making a difference in the lives of untold numbers of people in a totally different and more meaninful way. Your spirit, your determination, your attitude of never giving up, your desire to share what you have, your obvious deep love and devotion for each other -- these are qualities that the world yearns for and needs to experience through people like you. I don't know if you are Christians, but I am; and I will promise to pray for you both, asking God to give you strength and hope, His light when there is darkness, and continued influence for the good of humankind. Dear Alexei and Dace: Ten years passed since you changed completely my perception about pianists at the Chopin International Competition for Piano in 1995. Yes, I was there in Warsaw, feeling that piano music could be dynamic and three-demensional if the instrument were under control by a genius like you. Your perfomance in Chopin's piano concerto No 2 made me moved, stunned, and filled with joy and comfort. (Oh, how I wish I could be loaded with sufficient vocabulary to explain what I encountered with at that time!) Alexei and Dace, I would like sincerely to say that all my prayers are always with you.

I was at Plaza Medical Hospital today and was very blessed to hear you and Dace play for everyone! What a wonderful Christmas present for all who were there. It really touched all of us at a very low moment. My sister's husband has been there since Friday and has not been doing very well, so this was very uplifting for us. Dace, you are a remarkable woman and I know Alexei is very thankful to have you as his wife and partner. And your performance on the cello with him is very moving. His father just beams with pride of you both. Thank you both again for the time you took to perform for all of us their. May God bless you richly! Your friends forever, Fran and Billy Prock

I remember seeing Alexei at the 1989 piano competition. He was extraordinary. I'm terribly saddened and sorry to hear about his health. Please tell him how much he inspired me as a pianist and student of classical music, and now as a human being. Keep fighting Alexei! I look forward to the day when i can see Alexei play again. You have given such a tremendous gift to the world. Thank you very much. Otis Gray

I was very suprised to learn of Alexei's condition. I have been in Japan for a few years and now I am back in Atlanta. I was just wondering what had happened to him recently and I am very sorry to hear. I met Alexei in Atlanta when he came to perform the Tchaikovsky piano concerto no.1 years ago under Yoel Levi. We spoke during a reception for quite a while about music and my time spent in Tblisi. It was my intention to keep in touch with him thereafter, but I was unable to get his contact information before we parted. Now that I know what has happened to him, I hope that I can stay updated regarding anything that he needs. Please let me know. Thank you very much. Trevin Dye (Atlanta, GA) trevindye@yahoo.com

Dear Alexei, Our two piano room has never again been so supercharged as when you came to visit and play....never mind that you had just given a masterful and mind-boggling concert at the University here in Greenwood, SC.....listening to Ginsberg recordings, watching you dash from piano to piano, demonstrating tempi in this or that Chopin Ballade the way YOU liked them, "C'mon, let's hear this again, this tempo it really works...." We ate and drank and listened some more, then (oh, around 3 am, who cares?) you spied Rhapsody in Blue for Four Hands. "C'mon. We all play. I know this." Of course you did, you know everything. Tony and I were at one piano, trying to keep up with you at the other. As I recall, we were the orchestra most of the time, with Alexei as himself, as well as both George AND Ira Gershwin, "Porgy" (yes, you did some singing as well), and conductors Paul Whiteman, Toscanini, and Leonard Bernstein. You DID almost manage to corner the Greyhound, Kutie, by chasing her at full throttle throughout the main floor. Since she goes 40 mph on the straightaway, the two of you were quite delighted with yourselves. Yes, she is still fine, waiting for someone else who REALLY knows how to play with a Greyhound. Congratulations on your citizenship, and good luck in the elections. We celebrate your fortitude, we pray for your continued determination, with a special prayer for Dace, your therapists, and your physicians. Many hugs and kisses, Kudos for your marvelous Chopin Ballades disc, Hang on to that horse! Marianne and Tony Lenti

Dear Alexei, Many years ago, when I was still living in the States (long before people had Internet in their homes), I took a trip to the nearest really large record store and bought my first collection of tapes. Among the items I purchased was your recording of the Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff concerti - furthermore, I was very pleased with it. Some time later, I moved to Poland, heard about your performance at the Chopin competition (though I was not actually present), its new interpretation which apparently created controversy in some quarters... Then, more recently, I got a permanent Internet connection in my home, and one day I decided to do web searches for musicians I admire, among them you, see what they're up to, etc. It was obviously quite a surprise to find out what you have been up to the past few years, in significant measure a pleasant one, actually - I have been very edified to read of the progress you are making. No doubt you are learning a lot about life, about the things of the spirit, surely what you are learning will cause you to evolve as a person and as a musician too. I look forward to seeing what God has for you. May He bless you, Dace, your Dad and the rest of your family richly Cara T.

Alexie. Hope you recover soon. I am listening to your Tchaikovsky No. 2 and Rachmaninov No. 2 recording with Shostakovich and London Symphony. They are so white hot. I think they are the most exciting recording around. It is a pity that Alexie did not record the Rach 3. It is also a shame for the Wawsaw jury not to award Alexie the gold medal of the Chopin competition. Alexie is the best.

He played two concertos: Rachmaninof 2, and Tchaikovsy with the National Symphonic Orchestra. I was 15 and I think it was the first time when I heard a musician like Alesha so far. God gave him a talent wich Alesha showed and put in every person' heart through the his music who were there in the big recital hall that night. I really proud that I graduted from the same musical school as Alexei Sultanov. I hope that I will hear his gorgeous sound and sensitive technique someday in my life. I know, that God will help him at that difficult moment for everybody who trythfully believe in Alexey' talent. I hope that someday I can play with Alesha some Brahms or Pulenc sonata for piano and clarinet. If Alesha won't mind about that. He is one of the greatets musicians in the World!
